Hi Sam - Welcome to Wolf!
You can of course have an "automatic navigation system", but we need to know quite a bit more to give you all the help you might need. Just for starters, you should look at the Navigation Cookbook in the Wiki.
One example of a "cookbook recipe" applied is in the use of "Suckerfish" menus. Have a look at oweb's working example which also gives you the code.
But, as I said, if you have a specific requirement, however, you will have to tell us more!

Good to know! (But you're in the Maldives? The view from cool and cloudy Scotland is that it would be hard to get work done in the Maldives!

(off topic) David: Please do not say that in Scotland is cold. In Poland is snow (again) and -4 at the moment. Tomorrow I am going to Scotland and I live in hope that will be wormer than here ;-) Do not want to ask how is on Maledives now :-)
