What is Wolf CMS?
[ Jump to: Target Audience | Helping out | Donations ]
Wolf CMS simplifies content management by offering an elegant user interface, flexible templating per page, simple user management and permissions, as well as the tools necessary for file management. Wolf CMS is a fork of Frog CMS, which was itself a PHP migration of the Ruby-on-Rails app, Radiant CMS. Wolf is now forging its own development path, although a family resemblance with these two systems can still be seen.
Wolf requires PHP5, a MySQL database or SQLite 3 with PDO, and a web server (Apache with mod_rewrite is highly recommended). It is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3. The source is available from Wolf’s Google Code project page.
Because Wolf CMS uses PHP directly, there is no need to learn yet another scripting language. This approach has two main advantages:
- Normally, PHP is not used in article pages, so it does not frighten the writer who does not want to learn it.
- The webmaster/designer of the site, the one who will code some basic condition or/and loop to add more dynamics to the website, generally knows some PHP already — at least enough to add some dynamic latest news part, latest articles, photo gallery, etc…
Target audience
Wolf CMS’s target audience are web developers, web designers and other people with at least some PHP skills.
The CMS is, and will remain, very usable for people who don’t have PHP coding skills. However, in order for people to take full advantage of what Wolf CMS has to offer, at least basic PHP coding skills are expected.
In short: PHP skills expected but not required.
Helping out…
Despite the Wolf CMS project still being a very young, several people have asked the question every project loves to hear: “How can I help?”.
A common misconception many people have is that they cannot help out since they don’t know how to program. Any open source project has many things they need help with. Here are some ideas on how you can help out the Wolf CMS project:
- Show your appreciation for the effort the volunteers put into this project.
- Promote the project and refer people to its homepage.
- Help out by writing new documentation, fixing errors in documentation or otherwise help clarify it.
- Answer questions from other users in the forums
- Develop a new plugin or help out existing plugin developers.
- Help create new themes or new administration themes for Wolf CMS.
- Find and report security issues
- Find and report other issues
- Attach patches to issues to help solve them.
- Keep a “Wolf CMS Inside” link in the footer of your site or somewhere else on your site.
Donating money
If you make money by using Wolf CMS or simply want to help out financially, you can donate money. The amount is entirely determined by yourself.
Any proceeds from donations will be used for hosting fees and other project related costs as well as wildlife (wolves) preservation.
